Student Teaching Observations (CT/US/DST)








This observation does not need to include all elements noted on the form. Evaluate the student teacher based on the following scale: 3 = Exemplary (performance well above that of a beginning teacher); 2 = Proficient (performance is apt and effective; typical of a solid beginning teacher); 1 = Developing (performance shows effort, but work is needed to improve); 0 = Not Met/Unacceptable (There is little or no evidence; performance is not acceptable); or N/A (Unable to observe).

Student teacher provides clear and appropriate standards, goals, and/or objectives for students prior to the lesson content based on short- and long-range goals. Clear and deliberate connections between content and objectives are made.

Student teacher designs lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate and address students' developmental levels.

Student teacher uses student background and thinking to build learning opportunities and motivate student learning, encourage thinking, and develop interactions.

Student teacher develops, implements, and evaluates lessons and instructional strategies to meet various instructional needs, maximize learning, and incorporate a range of teaching/learning materials and resources.

Student teacher creates a variety of clear presentations and representations of concepts; alternative explanations of concepts are made available to assist in understanding, and critical thinking is encouraged.


Student teacher uses approaches that are sensitive to student's experiences, learning, and performance modes; multiple perspectives are brought into the lessons that call attention to student's background, experiences, and norms.

Student teacher nurtures the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance capabilities using multiple teaching and learning strategies, active learning opportunities, and independent use of learning resources

Student teacher develops expectations for student engagement that creates a positive, open, respectful, supportive learning environment.

Student teacher organizes, prepares students for, monitors independent and group work that allows for full, varied, and effective participation of all individuals.


Student teacher is flexible in adapting and accommodating students' learning differences or needs regarding time and circumstances for work, tasks, communication, and responses, and not exclusively for students on IEPs or 504 plans.

Student teacher monitors, analyzes, and adjusts work and the classroom environment in response to learner feedback (immediate and delayed, informal and formal).


Student teacher knows effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques; effective listening is employed.

Student teacher fosters sensitive communication by and among the students in the classroom.

Student teacher knows how to ask questions to stimulate discussion, encourage a variety of thinking skills, and help students articulate their responses.


Student teacher designs, develops and manages a learning community where students develop relationships with one another, take responsibility for themselves and others and demonstrate respect for individual differences.

Student teacher maximizes class time by creating and following through with expectations and processes for communication and behavior that are conducive to learning.
